Digipak Research

To start thinking about the ancillary tasks I thought a good starting point was to go out and ask people their opinions to get an idea of where to begin.
The main views that I got were:

- Want to see an interesting image e.g. the new take that cover which is innovative compared to the robbie williams which is more plain and straightforward.

- Like to have the lyrics available on the inside to sing along
- Want it to be colourful and happy
- Like it when there is abstract artwork used
- Clear nice fonts
- Like it when the font is lots of magazine letter cut outs

- Would be cool to have it in the style of something else e.g. a comic

Outfits for Video

Before I am able to film my video, I needed to plan to outfits tha
t the main character would be wearing throughout. As it is traditional for the character to have different outfits changes throughout, I thought I would also include this in mine, and come up with 7 outfit changes for Cesca.

The first outfit would be another possibility for the woods scene. This outfit is more of a back-up outift incase we decide to film any more scenes on the day that look good. May be possible to use this for an indoor scene, maybe with her just up against a wall or something.

This outfit would be for the first scenes, where she is dancing and singing around her bedroom getting ready for bed.

The floral lacey pattern on the top and the patterns of the tights and shorts would fit well with the park scenes. The colours of cream and brown would contrast nicely with the green of the grass and plants.

For the grafitti wall scene i thought this outfit would be good and fit in well with the bright colours and feel of the mise en scene.

This outfit would be used for the town scenes. When picking the outfit we wanted to find something cool and that the character would wear in her everyday life.

In the beach scene I feel that she should be more girly and innocent, therefore this skirt is perfect for those scenes.

Although there is another outfit used for the woods scene in these pictures, I think this particular one would fit best with the feel as it is wintery and warm but the leggings still add a bit of jazz to it.

Images of my video

I have collected some images of what I hopefully will be able to create and use as interestingshots and locations. By putting them all together I've created a good feel of what the final piece might look like.

After deciding on the types of areas that I wanted to shoot my video in, I then needed to do some research about the areas that would be available for me to use in the area I live in. The final five locations include these:
- Elm hill (town setting)
- Grapes hill subway (graffiti)
- Great Yarmouth (beach)
- Eaton/Earlham park/Plantation gardens (parks)
- Mousehold heath/Earlham woods/Tiffey walk (woods scene)

After deciding these locations which are all within the Norwich perimiter (excluding Great Yarmouth) this makes the shooting much easier as you are not having the travel between ridiculous amounts and if planned right then will be time efficient. This means that next I need to think about the order of the shots that I will shoot, to minimise travelling and save on petrol.

The shot list that I am going to do is as follows:
- Wymondham, River Tiffey/Woods
- Plantation Gardens, Newmarket Road
- Eaton Park, Norwich
- Earlham Park, Norwich
- Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich
- Grapes Hill, Norwich
- Elm Hill, Norwich
- Mousehold Heath, Norwich
- Great Yarmouth Beach

Copyright

Copyright protects the original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works. It allows an original work to be considered a property that is owned by somebody. In music, the copyright begins automatically once a piece of music is created, and documented or recorded. Copyright lasts generally for a period of 70 years.

In order to solve the copyright issues with my piece of music I thought it would be easiest for me to email Eliza Doolittles company/management and ask for their permission to use the song and post it on YouTube. The response that I got was very positive and I was lucky just to even get a reply so..The email that I sent to them went as follows:

'Dear to whom it may concern,
I am currently in my final year of A-Level Media at Wymondham High Sixth Form, Norfolk and for my production coursework I have chose to do a music video. Therefore I am contacting you to ask for permission to use the song by Eliza Doolittle - Pack Up. The work would not be distributed further than my coursework blog (http://sophieo123.blogspot.com) and possibly YouTube if that's okay. If it's possible for you to give any thoughts or feedback for a potential video then that would be really appreciated; i'm basing the theme around gaining self-confidence and having no worries as that is what I interpret the meaning as.
Thanks a lot,
Sophie Osborne'

The email that I got back was
'Sure you can! We would love to see when it's done. Good luck.'

Initial Fashion Ideas

Within my piece I would ideally like the fashion to be very up-to-date and and fashionable. The types of clothes that I will be stocking from would be highstreet shops such as Topshop and Miss Selfridge. In these shops they usually sell quite quirky and interesting clothes that also have good colours incorporated in them which would then further enhance the look and feel of my video.

Initial Location Ideas

The main scenes that I think would be good to film at are the following:
- Beach
- Forest/Woods
- Parks
- Town/City streets and areas
I think by using these locations I would be able to create some very imaginative shots and portray some interesting ideas within them. The colours of the beach huts and the leaves in the forest would be good for me to portray the idea of happiness and bright colours. As the song mentions industrial areas this is when the shots would flick to the locations such as the shops and other areas (maybe a warehouse or something around that description). Somewhere murky that i would be able to add bright coloured objects to might be very aesthetically interesting and I think it would create a good mise en scene especially for the sections of the song where it is more down-beat and unhappy.

TREATMENT

A young girls journey to gain self-confidence and not care what other people's opinions of her may be. Going to bed early on a weekend evening is not the most exciting lifestyle, but little does she know when she wakes up in the morning thing's will appear much better. She falls asleep in her bed which apparently is in the centre of a field/forest to represent the freedom that she is going to feel in the morning and while the night turns into the day all the embarrassing moments that have made her self-conscious are shown. She wakes up and gets out of bed, the sun is shining through the windows and for once she has a smile on her face. When she wakes up there is a new spring in her step and she's feeling good. As she walks down the street she reflects on days when she was just a butterfly, trapped in a cocoon, when she would trip over in the street and feel ashamed, when she would drop glasses on the floor making them smash and when she would struggle to get through crowds in the street. The whole video follows the girl have a new and improved personality, where she doesn't care about anything going on around her. She doesn't care if people are talking behind her backs and gossiping, because in this moment, she is happy. Her confidence even grows as far as her pushing the limits of what is acceptable in society, for example at one point she drops her magazine on the floor as she's walking away. As she does this the camera turns to show the people around her shocked at this new girl, and talking about the thing's she has just done. The girl also reflects on the time when she was truly care free and didn't worry; when she was a child. Shows children at the age of 5 playing in the garden. They are using a sand pit and water table toy and burying thing's, which symbolises them burying their worries beneath the sand. This reflects to the lyrics as they say about burying items beneath the sea. To represent the happiness and care free feel to the video, some of the sections, particularly the walking parts and the bedroom sections will be done in the style of a musical. People will be dancing in the street and just generally not worrying about any of the stresses of everyday life like they might usually do. Towards the end of the video the girl will be shown to overcome the same situations that she would usually have curled up under a rock over. If she falls over in the street now, then she will be getting straight back up, shaking it off and carrying on. Throughout the video the theme will be the one girl (main singer) showing you round her life and the different locations and situations that she deals with.

Todorovs Narrative Theory

As humans in media we look for a beginning, middle and an ending. The human mind wants to make sense of things and we are constantly looking for connections in different events for example when watching a film.

Todorov's theory suggests that narrative should involve a transformation through the progression of a disruption. There are five main stages to Todorovs theory of narrative:

1. A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)
2. A disruption (usually by an event)
3. Recognition that the disruption has occurred
4. Attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
5. Return or restoration of a new equilibrium

This theory is something that I will be including in my piece. In the narrative of my piece there is not really a starter equilbrium it is more just the gaining of an equilibrium when the character becomes happy and confident.
